How to Enter a Timer: Hourly, Per Unit, Commission
« on: February 29, 2016, 11:10:38 AM »

VSS has been built to accommodate a wide variety of compensation structures. You have the option to pay your employees by the hour, the unit, on a commission basis, or any combination of the three.

If you pay your employees hourly:
      1.   You will need to set their day and night wage rates in the Personnel tab in the Preferences module. See Setting Wages – Day and Night Rates post.
      2.   To add a new timer:
              a.   Navigate to the Time Sheets module.
              b.   Click New Timer.
              c.   Enter the date of the timer entry.
              d.   Link a Personnel- this will auto-populate the day and night Rate fields.
              e.   Link an Order (if applicable).
                       i.   This will auto-populate the Start Time with the “Time towboat out” and End Time with “Time towboat at base”.
ii.   This will auto-populate the Total From Order.
               f.   Both the Start Time and End Time fields are editable, if you wish to revise them.
              g.   Both the day and night Rate fields are editable, if you wish to revise them.
              h.   The Total From Order field is editable, if you wish to revise it.
                       i.   Please note that revisions to any auto-filled information will overwrite what was pulled into the field. In order to re-pull the Start Time, End Time, day Rate, night Rate, or Total From Order you will need to cancel the timer entry, create a new entry, and relink the new entry.
                       i.   Add Notes as you see appropriate and click Save.

If you pay your employees by the unit for a service:
     1.   If you compensate differently for specific services, for example: paying $5 a foot for Groundings, you can input the total number of feet of the boat and the rate per foot.
     2.   To add a new timer:
             a.   Click New Timer
             b.   Link Personnel - this will auto-populate the day and night Rate fields.
             c.   Link Order
                  i.   This will auto-populate the Start Time with the “Time towboat out” and End Time with “Time towboat at base” of that order, but if you do not have day and night wage rates listed for that employee in the Personnel tab - it will not calculate a Day Amount or Night Amount. If you do have wage rates listed, you can zero out those fields.
ii.   This will also auto-populate the Total From Order field, but will not calculate a Commission Amount.
             d.   In the Other row, place the number of units in the Units field and the rate that you pay per unit in the Rate field. It will calculate an Other Amount that will then total at the bottom of the timer entry.
             e.   Use the Notes field to add any information that you deem relevant to the entry. For example: You can clarify that the number in the Units field is in feet, yards, miles, etc.
             f.   Click Save

If you pay commission:
      1.   Click New Timer
      2.   Link Personnel
             a.   This will bring over the employee’s day and night rates, if that information is set in the Preferences module.
             b.   The day and night Rates are easily editable, if you wish to remove or change these numbers
      3.   Link Order
             a.   This will auto-populate the Start Time with the “Time towboat out” and End Time with “Time towboat at base” of that order.
             b.   This will also auto-populate the Total From Order field, but will not calculate a Commission Amount.
      4.   Enter the commission percentage for the employee.
            a.   Please note that you need to enter the commission percentage in decimal format. Ex: For 22.5% commission, you would enter .225.
