Include IM/video chat services that aren't supported by ABM?
« on: September 18, 2014, 10:59:39 AM »
I'm wondering what is the correspondence between the IM/Video Chat fields that are available with Address Book Manipulator Plugin (AMBP) and the current one's available on OSX Mavericks.

For example in AMBP I see (IM AOL, IM ICQ, IM Jabber...) as separate multiple value properties. However the types of MVP available don't correspond with the current once available in OSX Maverics (AIM, Facebook, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk...).

Furthermore, it seems that in OSX the chat or video chat items are all on kind of item (or 1 kind of Multiple Value Property) with 3 parts: label (home, work,...) value (whatever their username is) and type (AIM, Facebook, GAdu-Gadu....). Whereas in ABMP each of the available chat services is it's own type of MVP with only two parts, Label and Value.

So my question is, what is the best way to incorporate chat or video calling services that aren't yet supported by ABMP? Should I just use use the Multi Value Property IM AOL  and just use custom labels like (Skype Home, Skype Work, Google Plus Home,...) ? How would this work when pushing back to address book?

Do you have any suggestions of a cleaner way to do this?  Many thanks!

We are currently updating the plug-in to work with the new IM and Social Profile multi-value properties that are offered in the newer versions of Address Book / Contacts. We do not currently have a set date for when this new version will be released, but it is under development at this time.

You might find some success for using custom labels for the multi-value property to differentiate which it truly is. Address Book / Contacts will likely not interpret the property correctly when a user interacts with it (i.e. specifying "Skype Home" for an IM AOL property with a Skype username and clicking/tapping the username will likely not open up a Skype IM to that person). Beyond that, however, I fear that those particular properties will not be readily accessible until the plug-in is updated.

This functionality will be expanded and included in the next iteration of the Address Book Manipulator. We can add you to our Interest List, whereupon when the plug-in has been updated and released, you will be notified.
